For a wedding ceremony I usually play 20 to 30 minutes of soft classical music as people arrive. Then what works well is to play two songs at the beginning of the ceremony: one for the bridal party, and one for the bride. If you are doing a unity candle or similar, another song for that. Finally, I play a more lively celebration song for the recessional.

For cocktail hour I play a mix of everything but I keep the tempo more upbeat and lively.
